A Note from the Author

This is a book about taking risks. It’s about being able to tolerate reasonable risks with a willingness to believe, and even accept, that a decision may take an unfavorable turn and be costly, both in terms of money and personal comfort. While risk-taking is generally not a female characteristic, I am an arguably suitable example of why it is worthwhile to fold into who you are. Throughout my 80 years of life I have been conservative by nature. My dress,
my mannerisms, my speech, and my general deportment were all shaped by an upbringing where I was expected to do the right thing, follow the rules, and accept the social
conventions that governed middle-class life in the 1950s, especially in military families like mine.
This “read” is also a love story, and one that even some of my friends will be surprised to learn the exact contours of. It featured all the cliches that could have scuttled our
relationship but that only made it grow stronger for close to 50 years. In addition to being a life long marriage, our lives were a life long partnership in business....the business of philanthropy. All along the way, I have lived with opportunities to change the world in both small and important ways to benefit many people – in public policy, law and justice, and personal leadership commitment.
